Assess the adequacy of therapy by periodic assessment of laboratory tests and clinical evaluation. Pseudotumor cerebri and slipped capital femoral epiphysis have been reported in pediatric patients receiving thyroid replacement therapy. Overtreatment may result in craniosynostosis in infants and premature closure of the epiphyses in pediatric patients with resultant compromised adult height. Titrate the dose of CYTOMEL carefully and monitor response to titration to avoid these effects [see Dosage and Administration (2.4)]. Monitor for the presence of drug or food interactions when using CYTOMEL and adjust the dose as necessary [see Drug Interactions (7) and Clinical Pharmacology (12.3)]. The administration of liothyronine increases the action of the blood thinning drug, warfarin (Coumadin).

- Since postpartum TSH levels are similar to preconception values, the CYTOMEL dosage should return to the pre-pregnancy dose immediately after delivery [see Dosage and Administration (2.3)].
- Treat patients with adrenal insufficiency with replacement glucocorticoids prior to initiating treatment with CYTOMEL [see CONTRAINDICATIONS].
- In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary.
The recommended starting dosage is 5 mcg once daily, with a 5 mcg increase every 3 to 4 days until the desired response is achieved. Above 3 years of age, the full adult dosage may be necessary [see Use In Specific Populations]. Cytomel (liothyronine sodium) is a synthetic thyroid hormone used to treat hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). Cytomel is also used to treat or prevent goiter (enlarged thyroid gland), and is also given as part of a medical tests for thyroid disorders. Concurrent use of sympathomimetics and CYTOMEL may increase the effects of sympathomimetics or thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormones may increase the risk of coronary insufficiency when sympathomimetic agents are administered to patients with coronary artery disease.

Assess compliance, dose of medication administered, and method of administration prior to increasing the dose of CYTOMEL [see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS and Use In Specific Populations]. What is the most important information I should know about Cytomel (Liothyronine)?
If you take lanthanum, take it at least 2 hours before or after liothyronine. Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. Do not stop taking it without first talking with your doctor.
